Class code 3131 is used for employees that work in a manufacturing facility that makes metal buttons of other metal fastening devices. The metal used in the manufacturing will typically arrive to the factory in coils or strips which are then run though slide, dial, or coil presses. In addition, automatic or semiautomatic stamping presses may be used to complete any stamping that is necessary. Other responsibilities may include assisting with the various duties associated with cutting, stamping, forming, trimming, or cleaning the products. This classification also encompasses any enameling, lacquering, plating, and lithographing that is required to produce a finished product.

While buttons are considered the primary product made under class code 3131, the manufacturing of other light stamped metal items is also included. Examples of these may include zippers, buckles, snaps (both traditional and upholstery), clasps, curtain fasteners, jewelers findings, bottle or crown caps, and campaign/convention buttons.
