Class code 5506 is used for employees that perform street or road construction and paving or repaving operations, including drivers. Work will vary in scope, but may include things like constructing a concrete or crushed stone base, scraping, surfacing or paving operations, trimming of road shoulders, erecting and/or painting fences or guardrails, painting lines on the road or street, and installing curbs or gutters. Additionally, class code 5506 also applies to employees of highway toll roads who perform maintenance functions, contractors who paint separating lines or lanes on streets, roads, or highways, and asphalt works operations. Finally, the scope of this classification also includes the surfacing, resurfacing, paving, or repaving of airport runways and warming aprons as well.

Exclusions to class code 5506 includes those workers who provide right-of-way clearing, earth or rock excavation, and grading or filling work, as well as anyone who engages in tunneling, quarrying or stone crushing, or bridge or culvert operations. When classifying workers to this class code, it is also important to follow the extra-territorial classification guidelines for each worker to ensure that they are properly classified.
