Class code 5507 is used for employees that perform subsurface work to streets or roadways under a contractor, including drivers. Examples of work that is commonly found within this class code includes right of way clearing, earth excavation, filling or grading, and sand and gravel digging work that may be required to place the roadbed at the proper grade. In addition, this classification also includes the installation of small bridges or culverts (clearance less than 10 feet at any point) and work related to widening or changing of the line or grade. Those employees that do preparatory work, such as excavating, grading, laying a base of crushed stone, and installation of concrete drains, prior to the install of artificial turf for baseball or football stadiums is also included.

Exclusions to class code 5507 includes those workers who provide mass rock excavation, as well as anyone who engages in tunneling, quarrying or stone crushing, or bridge or culvert operations. When classifying workers to this class code, it is also important to follow the extra-territorial classification guidelines for each worker to ensure that they are properly classified.
