Street or Road Maintenance: County or State Department

Class code 5509 is used for employees that perform road or street maintenance work that is considered beautification in nature, including drivers. Work duties will vary, but may include things such as leveling and grading grounds and planting beds, planting flowers, shrubs, and grass on right-of-way areas, weed and brush removal, grass cutting, repair and maintenance of culverts, the erection or removing of signs, fencing, guardrails, or road markers, and dust laying operations. Additionally, this class code is used for contractors who operate truck-mounted hydromulchers that chop hay and straw, mix it with grass, seed, and water, and deposit it along embankments, streets, and roadways. Those workers who are responsible for installation of handrails (on pedestrian bridges), metal light poles, and attenuators, as well as those employees that reseal pavement joints are also included within the scope of class code 5509.

Exclusions to this class code would be any worker that performs construction related work to roadways, such as filling or grading for a roadbed, constructing the road foundation, widening or relocating a roadway, or paving and surfacing functions.
