Generally, this will be oil field specialist contractors, their workers, and their drivers, who perform duties like well maintenance, lubricating, oil treating services, oil field roustabout services, tank cleaning, ditch digging, excavation, repair of auxiliary equipment, as well as pumpers and dirt construction operators. Actual work performed will vary greatly from job to job, but may include using earth moving equipment, constructing dikes and dams, plumbing operations, cleaning, removal of residues from tank battery interiors, spreading of residue on oil lease roads, delivering specialty brine water, and removing of waste water. Additionally, the scope of this class code also includes those who engage in gas or oil leak containment and repair work, not otherwise classified.

Exclusions to class code 6216 that should be separately classified are those who perform maintenance work as employees of the oil or gas lease owner/operator, construct pipelines or provide pipeline maintenance, test or inspect oil or gas pipelines, operate an oil or gas pipeline, or drilling and redrilling workers. When classifying workers to this class code, it is also important to follow the extra-territorial classification guidelines for each worker to ensure that they are properly classified.
