Class code 9586 is used for employees that work for a barber shop, beauty parlor, or other hair styling salon. These locations will generally provide personal grooming services involving the hair, scalp, hands, and face to women and/or men. Examples of services commonly performed include hair shampooing, cutting, styling, dyeing, straightening, shaping, drying, setting, and permanent waving; facial shaving, massage, mustache/beard trimming, and eyebrow tweezing; as well as fingernail care, cosmetology related work, and indoor tanning. Additionally, employees of tattooing and body piercing businesses (not retail stores) are also included within the scope of class code 9586. These establishments may engage in work involving dyes and needles to puncture, decorate, or affix permanent eyebrows and eyeliners to a customer.

Exclusions that should be separately classified would be retail stores that offer incidental piercing services, health spas or tanning salons operating independently of any hair styling salon, and those operations that are primarily exercise institutes yet offer related services on the side.
